More fast-food restaurants are serving up breakfast. So, Consumer Reports tested 106 fast-food egg sandwiches to see if you can start your morning with a healthy and tasty meal.
They found very few of the sandwiches could be considered good for you.
"As far as nutrition goes, just six out of the 106 sandwiches rated very good," said Erin Gudeux of Consumer Reports All six were from Subway.
Next, the organization looked at taste.
Trained taste testers went undercover to at least three different locations of each chain to try seven of the more nutritious sandwiches.
Starbucks Turkey Bacon and White Cheddar Classic Breakfast Sandwich was just so-so.
"I found the egg a little low flavor, and the bacon is salty and smoky. I'm not getting, really, any meat flavor," said tester Maxin Siegel.
Dunkin' Donuts Egg White Turkey Sausage Wake-Up Wrap proved equally marginal. Testers said it very small and had eggs that were not flavorful.
So what breakfast egg sandwich was rated the best? Subway's Egg White and Cheese on Flatbread.
Consumer Reports rated it very good for taste. Testers found the egg whites flavorful and the toasted flatbread tender.
However, there was one important thing the testers discovered.
"With all the sandwiches, the quality varied from location to location," said Gudeux.
There are a couple of things you can do to make a fast-food breakfast sandwich more nutritious. Whenever you can, substitute egg whites for whole eggs, or leave off the cheese of meat.
Also, if the sandwiches come in different sizes, choose the smaller one. That will help lower the amount of calories, fat and sodium you ingest.
