Key leaders in the construction of the new Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center signed the final steal beam to mark the end of Phase 1.

Construction on Wing A is nearing completion and leaders held a "topping out" ceremony today to mark the milestone.  Crews hoisted the final steel beam to the top of the building, but not before leaders were able to sign their names to it.

"We protect lives, we defend our nation, so for people to sign this building that are part of its construction-as well as those who will be working here for years to come-it makes it personal for us," said Col. Jim McClain with the 59th Medical Wing.

The 681,000-square foot facility at Lackland Air Force Base will have four wings and will house more than 40 outpatient clinics and services when completed.. Construction is happening adjacent to the current building, which will be demolished once the new building is complete.

The project is expected to be completed by 2015 and will be the largest military outpatient surgical center in the United States.
