Gilbert Lopez, 47, was charged with altering, destroying or concealing a human corpse. An arrest affidavit stated that Lopez dumped the body of a woman who died of a drug overdose.

VON ORMY, Texas – What may have been considered an accidental death has led to criminal charges for a Von Ormy man.

Bexar County sheriff's investigators believe Gilbert Lopez, 47, dumped the victim's body after she died of a drug overdose, an arrest affidavit stated.

Investigators began looking into the case after the body of Valerie Garcia of Von Ormy turned up on the side of the road in the 4100 block of Noyes Street Feb. 4.

The affidavit stated that the medical examiner's office later determined that Garcia died of a heroin overdose.

Sheriff's investigators, however, suspected she did not die at the location where her body was found.

Instead, they said they believe she died inside a home about three miles away, on Deborah Kay Street, and that Lopez later dumped her body.

He was arrested Wednesday on a charge of altering, destroying or concealing a human corpse.
