Mixed-use property opens at Brooks City-Base

New development on city's southeast side

SAN ANTONIO – The face of the city's southside is changing, according to Manuel Pelaez-Prada, chairman of Brooks Development Authority.

On Thursday, Pelaez-Prada, along with other developers and business leaders celebrated the grand opening of the Landings at Brooks City-Base.

"Once the federal government decided to turn over Brooks Air force Base to the city, the city decided we are going to make this into a place where people work, live and where people play," said Pelaez-Prada. "And, this is one of the most important steps in accomplishing that mission."

The 300 unit, multi-family development offers high end living to the Southside of San Antonio.

Daniel Markson, Senior Vice President of The NRP Group, a full-service developer, said the Landings represent the most significant market-rate residential investment on the city's southside.

"For the first time in this complex, since the days of Ray Ellison, the middle class and the above median income in the city is moving back to the soothsaid," said Markson.

The $27 million apartment complex is part of a larger mixed-use development that will also house more retail, medical and office space development, all contributing to the economic development in the area.

"Everybody wants a great market rate apartment," said Ramiro Cavazos, President of the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. "Some place where they can have near work and with Toyota and Texas A&M, this is exactly what the Southside needs."

Pelaez-Prada said Thursday that the new Landings at Brooks City-Base is the first of many developments that they will be rolling out over the next 12 months.
