2 injured in shooting at Santikos Mayan 14 theater on Southwest Military Drive

Suspected shooter wounded by off-duty Bexar County officer

SAN ANTONIO – Two people were hospitalized after a man opened fire outside at a movie theater on the South Side late Sunday night.

Gunfire was reported around 9:30 p.m. at the Santikos Mayan 14 theater at 1818 S.W. Military Drive. Moviegoers ran for cover and ducked as gunshots rang out.

Bexar County Sheriff's Office spokesman Louis Antu said the shooting started outside the China Garden restaurant across the parking lot from the theater.

Antu said there was some dispute at the restaurant and that the shooter took off running and shooting across the parking lot and continued shooting in the theater as he ran into a theater bathroom.

An off-duty officer with the Bexar County Sheriff's Office, working security at the theater, followed the shooter inside and shot him.

That off-duty officer was not injured, but the shooter and another person who was hit by gunfire in the parking lot were transported to the hospital.

Antu also said that before the shooter entered the theater, he fired upon a police officer in a marked police unit right outside the theater. That officer was not hit.

Both the Bexar County Sheriff's Office and the San Antonio Police Department are investigating the case.

The name of the shooter, the victim and the female off-duty officer are not being released at this time.

However, Antu said they believe the shooter may have worked at the China Garden restaurant and that was something investigators are looking into.

Antu also credited the off-duty female Bexar County officer for taking quick action and saving several lives.
