A V.I.P. reception at St. Luke's Episcopal School on Friday in advance of a benefit concert for the John R. Foster Service Scholarship Fund featured an impromptu performance by Radney Foster and fellow singer/songwriter of note Drew Womak.
The two joked about writing songs for stars like Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban and more as they played several of their own hits for a group of fans and supporters.
Kenny Chesney, Luke Bryant, Keith Urban, Dixie Chicks, Sara Evans, and Ray Price are but a few of the names that come to Foster's mind when asked who he has written hits for.
Foster's career took off at the age of 26, when his band, Foster and Lloyd, had a number one hit. In addition, several of Foster's songs recorded by others won Grammy awards.
Foster said he's honored to have his songs cut by others, and at times seems to be scratching his head over the turn of events that led to his remarkable 35-year career with a guitar.
"It is nothing like I envisioned it, but I had no idea what it was like, or how hard you would have to work at it. Or the roller coaster ride that it is," he said.
Randy's mother, who was in the audience on the eve of the concert, agreed hardily.
"He was about 15. And we were like, 'Oh my goodness, is he ever going to get over this?'" Betty Foster mused.
Friday night's concert at the Empire Theater also features fellow singer/songwriters Jack Ingram, Bruce Robison and Kelly Willis. The later are enjoying a great week of notoriety.
"I didn't know that the week they play with us they would have the number one Americana record in the country and be on the cover of Texas Music Magazine. It doesn't hurt our show any, you know!" Foster said.
The concert begins at 7:30 p.m.
