Amazon hiring hundreds for Schertz facility

Online retail giant recruiting 'fulfillment associates'

SCHERTZ, Texas – Even as construction continues at the massive Amazon warehouse just off I-35, the online retail giant is already beginning to deliver: jobs.

"Right now, there's a full-court press out there to get these positions filled," said David Gwin, Schertz direction of economic development. "We know thee will be at least 350 full-time, fully benefitted jobs."

The bulk of the positions will be as fulfillment associates, employees to find merchandise in the cavernous warehouse, pack and ship it to the purchaser.

Applications are taken online at www.workatamazonfulfillment.com.

Pay will range, according to an email from Amazon PR. "On average, our positions pay 30 percent higher than traditional retail jobs," the email said

A check of job postings showed a seasonal employee would make $10.75 an hour, while a lead associate would earn $14 an hour.

Amazon announced Monday it plans to add 7,000 jobs nationwide to meet growth demands. About 5,000 of those jobs would be in fulfillment centers, including the Schertz center and two more in the Dallas area. Amazon is also adding 2,000 customer service jobs.

The Schertz facility would be used primarily for larger merchandise, like TVs and barbecue grills, according to the company.

"There's been a lot of discussion about the jobs both by those looking and those who want to see the economy grow," Gwin said. "This is huge for Schertz."

The 1.26 million-square-foot facility has a front elevation of nearly a half-mile. It is expected to be open by the end of the year.
