Fire rips through home near SAPD substation

Fire damages vacant home on West Mayfield

A fire damaged a home near a San Antonio police department substation Thursday evening.

Six San Antonio Fire Department units responded to the fire in the 700 block of West Mayfield just before 7 p.m. and found flames shooting through the second floor roof.

Fire crews battled flames for about 25 minutes and put out the fire. Officials determined the house was vacant and no injuries were reported, but they were concerned about the roof's stability.

Fire officials said they would inspect the house and determine if it needed further attention.

Damages were estimated at $60,000, but firefighters were able to keep it from spreading to a nearby apartment complex. A cause for the fire was unknown Thursday evening.
