When many people think of Texas, they think barbecue. There is even a reality competition show centered around barbeque and one of the teams is from right here in San Antonio.
JD's Team Xtreme BBQ is one of three teams from Texas chosen to compete on the reality show BBQ Pitmasters on Destination America.
"[It's a] big deal for us competition cookers. It's like the Super Bowl. It's a dream of everybody's to be on the show," said J.D. Davidsmeyer, award-winning pit master and team founder.
Davidsmeyer got involved in competition cooking about 10 years ago and he said it is nothing like backyard barbecuing.
"They start the pit up, burn some meat, kick back and drink a lot of beer. We do that on Friday nights at competition. On Saturday, it's the war," said Davidsmeyer.
Davidsmeyer's team started a foundation called Wounded Hearts, a nonprofit that helps homeless and wounded veterans.
"Whatever we win, if we win any money, we give 50 percent to our foundation to help the veterans," Davidsmeyer said.
Davidsmeyer said making the show is a big deal, and there are other competitions he wants to go to, but there is one goal he has for his barbeque team.
"The biggest thing I want to do here in San Antonio, is I want to cook for our Spurs, the San Antonio Spurs," said Davidsmeyer. "I know that they have probably been all over the place and they've probably eaten barbecue everywhere, but I want them to taste true San Antonio, south Texas barbecue."
J.D.'s Team Xtreme BBQ will be taking on teams from Midland and Waxahatchie in their episode of BBQ Pitmasters on Friday night at 8 p.m. on Destination America.
