Criminals in a Northeast Side neighborhood were caught on video breaking into vehicles in the middle of the night.
The break ins happened at the Steubing Ranch subdivision, and some residents said it happens when school is about to let out.
Steubing Ranch resident Kevin Riley used to look forward to the summertime, but not any more.
"It just seems like the vandalism and the thefts increase significantly," said Riley.
Over the weekend at least five vehicles in the neighborhood were broken into by three young men. Despite calls to police, Riley said the break-ins continue in the middle of the night.
"We try and get some type of enhanced patrol or some type of proactive of response from SAPD and we don't see any progress. We just see it get worse," said Riley.
Surveillance video taken from his outdoor camera clearly shows the burglar trying to get into his truck. Fortunately for him his truck was locked, but his neighbor wasn't so lucky.
Ross Whitty said sunglasses, DVDs and CDs were stolen from his unlocked SUV. Whitty fears what could happen to these kids who don't think someone won't take matters into their own hands.
"People are going to protect their property and it could just lead to a bad situation," said Whitty.
Crimes are just not limited to car break-ins, but home break-ins as well, said Riley and Whitty.
If you've been targeted or you recognize the people in the surveillance video, you're asked to call police immediately. Police advise residents to always lock cars and to remove valuables from their vehicles, even when parked in their driveway.
