A 22-year-old man identified as James Henigsmith is facing a charge of injury to a child after Bexar County sheriff's investigators said he spanked a 3-year-old boy for wetting the bed and left him with bruises.
An arrest warrant affidavit stated that the child's grandmother noticed the bruises on the boy's bottom while helping him in the bathroom last Thursday and notified the sheriff's office.
The affidavit stated that she said her grandson told her that Henigsmith, his mother's boyfriend, "spanked him hard" and slapped him in the face because he wet his bed.
The woman told investigators that before noticing the bruises, she had offered to bathe her grandson at one point, but Henigsmith insisted on doing it himself.
She said she thought it was strange when she then saw him put the child into the bathtub with his pajamas still on, the affidavit stated.
The woman told investigators that while her grandson was using the bathroom at a later time, she noticed the bruises, the affidavit stated.
Sheriff's detectives said they examined the child and also noticed them, the affidavit stated. Henigsmith was taken into custody on Friday.
