San Antonio International Airport's Terminal A officially complete

Terminal offers modern new touches

SAN ANTONIO – On Wednesday, San Antonio International Airport officials celebrated the completion of modern, new touches on its Terminal A by offering piano music and complementary cookies to passengers.

After the phased construction, the terminal is now brighter, boasts new finishes, fixtures, and furniture. Also modernized are the terminal's hold rooms, restrooms, ticket lobby, baggage claim, and food courts. Carpet was also replaced by terrazzo flooring.

"The whole intent was to take a building that was about 31 years old today and make it seem similar to the newer Terminal B that opened in 2010," said Aviation Director Frank Miller.

The project was fully funded by the airport and took just under two years to complete. Airport officials said the next step would be to begin renovations in the customs area.

"About 7 to 8 percent of our total passenger traffic is international (coming) through customs from Mexico," said Miller. "So we want to give them that same sense -- that this is San Antonio. This is a welcoming and open city."

The exterior may receive some work too, but expansion, according to Miller, is not in the works.
