SAN ANTONIO – If you drive along Loop 1604 on the city's North Side, pay attention to the speed limit signs -- they could be changing, depending on the day.
Starting next Wednesday, the Texas Department of Transportation will implement a pilot program that will adjust speed limits depending on current conditions and traffic congestion.

There are several test areas across the state.
In San Antonio, the variable speed limit system will be tested on the westbound lanes of Loop 1604 between Highway 281 and Interstate 10.
The speed limits on the signs will be adjusted with traffic sensors that identify factors like construction, traffic congestion and weather conditions.
The posted speed will be the maximum speed allowed by law.
Drivers will be required to follow whatever limit is posted.
The speed limit testing will continue for at least three months, then TxDOT could decide to expand the program.
