Nikki's American dream

Woman's documentary series brings attention to tough issues

SAN ANTONIO – One woman marching in the San Antonio Pride Parade this Fourth of July weekend is taking her goal of achieving her American dream world wide.

She is Nikki Araguz Loyd and she was born a boy. She is the widow to a fallen firefighter, a newlywed to a new husband and a step mother to two children.

Now, her story is the subject of a YouTube documentary series called "Nikki's American Dream."

Nikki has been on the front lines of gender discussion since she came out with her story at the age of 17.

"I was a little boy who felt like a little girl," she said.

She married as a woman to a Houston firefighter, who was killed four years ago in a structure fire.

After his death, she fought to marry again as a woman.

"My birth certificate says I am a woman. Why shouldn't I be legally married as a woman to a man?" she said.

All this and more is why her new documentary series is hoping to make waves every Saturday in July.

"People are familiar and getting comfortable with gay rights issues, but transgender remains hard for folks to understand," she said.

Nikki has fought to be recognized legally in every way as a woman, even taking her fight to the Texas Supreme Court.

"This is my American dream," she said.
