SAPD: Girl, 18, could face charges in fiery crash on North Side

SAPD officers rescue driver and passenger trapped in car

SAN ANTONIO – Four people were hospitalized following a fiery wrong-way crash on the far North Side, San Antonio police said.

The accident happened just after 1 a.m. Tuesday at Stone Oak Parkway and Tuscany Stone.

Police said 18-year-old Helena Ryals was driving a Mazda 3 south in the northbound lanes of the road.

"At the last minute, she swerved to avoid oncoming traffic. Skid marks indicate she flew into the median here." said San Antonio police Officer Sarah Rahman.

Ryals then smashed the Mazda into a tree, police said.

"Once she hit the tree, the car burst into flames, pinning the two front seat passengers inside," said Rahman. "Two SAPD officers made the scene and extracted both passengers while the car was engulfed in flames."

A good Samaritan also came to the aid of two of the teens who were trapped inside the car, police said.

The driver and one passenger were taken by AirLIFE to University Hospital and two passenger was transported to the hospital by ambulance.

Police did not immediately release an update on their condition. The officers were treated at the scene by paramedics.

Police did not immediately know what caused the driver to go the wrong way and lose control.

A preliminary information report by SAPD stated Ryals was under investigation for intoxication assault and that officers found an inhalant can inside the car near the driver sat.
