Family, friends remember slain couple

Suspect killed by deputy serving warrant

SAN ANTONIO – Candles, balloons and photos lined the sidewalk in front of the home where Darlene Robinson, 34, and Genaro Covarrubias were shot and killed Sunday in the 2300 block of Delgado Street.

"There's no words to describe what we're going through," said Ruby Hernandez, Covarrubias' sister, at a vigil Monday held for the young couple. "He looked scary on the outside, but he was sweet as sugar on the inside. Big old teddy bear."

Robinson's ex-boyfriend, Christopher Doss, is accused of killing the couple.

Monday morning, members of the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force were serving a capital murder warrant in connection to the shooting at the Relax Inn in the 500 block of Roosevelt Avenue when Doss was killed, according to the San Antonio Police Department.

A Bexar County sheriff's deputy fired the fatal shot.

"Whenever they opened the door and made access to the room, that's whenever the suspect attempted to grab a gun. And at that time our deputy made the decision to shoot and kill the suspect," said James Keith, with the Bexar County Sheriff's Office.

Doss' alleged crime is a tragic form of déjà vu.

In 1994, he was convicted of murder in another alleged love triangle in Tarrant County.

"If we would've known this ahead of time, we would've seen something," said Valerie Cedeno, Robinson's sister.

Cedeno says Doss never abused Robinson.

"It really feels like a dream. It feels like it hasn't happened and I think it's because we haven't seen her," she said.

Robinson leaves behind two sons and two daughters ages 20, 18, 15 and 8.

Covarrubias leaves behind two daughters.

"I'm going to miss that I always saw her with Gigi, which is her 8-year-old daughter, and 15-year (old) daughter always together," said Robinson's sister, Lorrina Robinson.

"Tonight I will be praying for all three of them. Hopefully they're all resting in peace," said Cedeno.
