Family of woman slain Christmas Day wants justice

Roxanne Sanchez, 28, allegedly fatally shot by her boyfriend

SAN ANTONIO – Christmas morning would forever change the family of 28-year-old Roxanne Sanchez.

"By 10:26 a.m. she was pronounced dead at University Hospital with a gunshot to her chest," said Sanchez's mother, Elizabeth Rodriguez.

Police said Sanchez was shot and killed in the 4300 block of First View Drive during an argument with her boyfriend, 31-year-old Benjamin Poehlman, on Christmas Day.

Officers arrested Poehlman with a gun in his hand after finding him locked in a room with the victim.

"Even my grandson (said), 'What Christmas gift is this? My mommy's gone, he took our mommy away from us,'" Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez says her daughter was leaving Poehlman, and alleges it wasn't the first time he had become violent with her.

"Why did he have to take my daughter like that? We do not know. She was tired of him and she was ready to come (home)," said Rodriguez.

Sanchez leaves behind four children ranging from 2 to 12 years old.

"She was full of life, (a) beautiful woman, beautiful mother, daughter, sister, aunt," Rodriguez said.

The shooting remains under investigation. The Sanchez family says they want justice.

"Yes, we do want justice done and I just hope he doesn't come out at all," said Rodriguez.
