SAN ANTONIO – Princess Amelia is a pampered poodle that loves to wear dresses and bows but, according to her owner, her greatest happiness comes from helping others.
"She makes people feel better," said owner Maria Carrizales.
Princess Amelie is a certified therapy dog.
Every Monday, Carrizales takes Princess Amelie to make the rounds at CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Medical Center. Carrizales goes to every floor, knocking on doors and asking patients if they'd like to visit with Princess Amelie.
Her visits are a big morale booster for the staff and almost better than medicine for some patients.
Hospital patient Angelina Guerrero was brought to tears when Princess Amelia came to her room. Guerrero has been in the hospital for a kidney transplant and had been missing her own dog.
"She's just beautiful and she made my day," said Guerrero.
"The studies are out there and that's one reason we brought pet therapy into our hospital: to help with the healing at the hospital and it just lifts their spirits," said Angelia Dingle, clinical nurse manager.
It takes a special dog to become a therapy dog. They have to have a gentle personality and must be certified.
Princess Amelie and her owner are certified and work with the group WAGS Across Texas. They've been volunteering for the past three years; bringing smiles and comfort to patients.
"We really enjoy doing this, both of us," said Carrizales.
