Thieves target gymgoers at LA Fitness

Cash, blank checks stolen from gym lockers

SAN ANTONIO – Two men claim their personal belongings were stolen from gym lockers at a local LA Fitness.

Pete Bond and his friend John Horton both filed police reports, hoping the people responsible will be caught soon.

Bond said thieves stole from him last month at the LA Fitness on Babcock Road, near Huebner Road.

He said in less than an hour, someone broke into his locker and stole hundreds of dollars in cash, blank checks, even his car keys. Plus, the thieves found his vehicle in the parking lot and ransacked it.

"To go into a place that you pay for membership, and they have to have tools to break those locks. That's not done with a little pair of pliers. How are those tools getting in there, and who's doing it, and who's watching?" said Bond.

Horton said he was targeted by thieves at the same gym a year ago.

He said when he returned to his locker, he found his credit cards, driver's license and over a hundred dollars in cash gone.

"When it happens to a good friend, it just creates that same sensation that you had at the time of being robbed again," said Horton.

Horton followed up his incident by writing letters to LA Fitness' corporate office to get some answers.

Those letters returned to him unopened.

He's now resorted to just warning fellow gym members to be more careful.

"Watch your locker and have a good lock and don't bring in anything you don't want to lose. It's a horrible position to be in to have to make that be your introduction to someone," said Horton.

The marketing coordinator for LA Fitness had no comment available Friday, but said the company would contact KSAT 12 if the company's corporate office had anything to say about these reported cases.
