Bowe Bergdahl charged with desertion

SAN ANTONIO – U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl has been charged with desertion, Army officials announced Wednesday afternoon during a news conference.

Bergdahl was held as a prisoner of war in Afghanistan for five years after he disappeared from his post. He was released in May 2014 in exchange for five Taliban leaders, a decision that generated criticism due to allegations the Army sergeant was a deserter.

He was then moved to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio for his reintegration process.

Bergdahl is currently stationed at Fort Sam Houston.
