SAN ANTONIO – A wife whose husband was killed in a crash Thursday is trying to pick up the pieces for her unborn son.
Larry Tavitas Jr., 28, was in the driver's seat of his stalled SUV on Southwest Loop 410 near Moursund Road when he was hit.
Genevieve Herrera said she is expecting a baby boy in June and was excited to be a first-time parent.
She said her husband, Tavitas, was also excited for the baby and that she is devastated now that he's gone.
"He would always be helping other people," said Herrera. "And he would always just talk about his baby and touching on my stomach, saying he can't wait until it comes out."
Tavitas' friends said the SUV was disabled at the time and that they were trying to push it off the road, with Tavitas behind the wheel.
"We were just trying to push the truck to get to a gas station because they wanted to get home," said Margarita Soto, a family friend. "He didn't get to get home. We were in the hospital, but he didn't make it."
Soto's 6-year-old daughter and teenage son were also in the SUV but were not hurt.
Police had reported that the SUV did not have its lights on, but Soto said that wasn't the case.
"The lights were on," said Soto. "The truck, wherever it was coming from, why didn't he see us? I don't know, but he could have seen us."
To make matters worse, Herrera, after finding out that she lost her husband, came home to find her home had been burglarized.
"We see the door is just all pushed in," said Herrera. "They just pushed their feet in and they stole like everything, our TVs. They stole my baby's clothes."
In order to help the family, Tavitas' friends are holding a meal fundraiser Sunday morning at 10 a.m. at Las Gueras in the 2200 block of Bandera Road.
