Shootout leaves 1 man dead, another critically wounded

Gunfire erupts in 8000 block of Trail Village near FM 78

SAN ANTONIO – One man was killed and another man was critically wounded in a shooting early Tuesday in east Bexar County.

Sgt. Raymond Pollard of the Bexar County Sheriff's Office Homicide Unit said the shooting occurred in the 8000 block of Trail Village near FM 78 around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday moments after a 41-year-old man left his home to go to the store to get food for his family.

"When he backed out there was (a) confrontation with these three other individuals. He drove back to the house and proceeded to get a weapon, and apparently these other individuals who were walking down the street also had weapons," Pollard said.

Deputies at the scene said they believe the man who died fired the gunshots that left a 26-year-old man with four wounds. He was transported to San Antonio Military Medical Center in critical condition.

Deputies recovered a gun next to the man who died. A second weapon was found a small distance from the scene.

John Cooper awoke to the sound of gunfire and ran outside to find two men lying on the ground.

"You want to render aid, but then again, when you hear shots, you got to be safe about it. I saw another individual by the gentleman lying down," Cooper said.

At first, Cooper didn't recognize his 41-year-old neighbor who he described as a hard worker who provided for his family.

Deputies are working to determine who the actual victim is in the case. They're also looking for a third individual who may have been involved in the shooting.

They are also talking to witnesses and conducting interviews trying to figure out if others were involved.
