Bautista is charged in the fatal stabbing of graduate student Lauren Bump while she was jogging through O.P. Schnabel Park on Jan. 31, 2013.
Bautista's roommate, Ryan O’Shea, testified Monday that he gave the defendant an 8-inch combat knife for Christmas.
O’Shea said that after Bump's body was found he asked Bautista about the knife.
O’Shea said Bautista told him that he stabbed someone and had to get rid of it.
O’Shea later contacted police and told them about the conversation.
If he is found guilty, Bautista faces a maximum punishment of life in prison.
