SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police on Friday released surveillance video showing a person of interest in the stabbing death of Ruth Valdez, 49.
Valdez's body was found Feb. 17 under a sheet behind a building in the 700 block of Isom Road. A police report said two people lifted up the sheet and saw the body underneath, then threw pebbles at it to determine if the person was still alive.
The Medical Examiner’s Office said that Valdez died of multiple stab wounds. The office said it wasn’t until earlier this week, though, that Valdez was positively identified.
San Antonio police spokesman Officer Doug Greene said homicide detectives only learned her identity after a relative filed a missing persons report.
"They said that they couldn't get ahold of her. They were calling her cellphone. She wasn't returning the calls. They were looking for her. They couldn't find her,” Greene said. "When that information went to the missing persons unit, they contacted the homicide unit to see if any of the descriptors would match up with anybody homicide was working."
WATCH: Surveillance Video
Police said the video released Friday came from a store near Blanco Road and West Avenue on the day before Valdez's body was found. Valdez and the person of interest are seen leaving in a newer-model, dark-colored Jeep Cherokee, police said.
“She was shopping with somebody in a convenience store,” Greene said. “We’re hoping someone will know who he is.”
Greene said the video is the last known sighting of Valdez. Police are still looking for Valdez's maroon Honda Civic with Texas license plate CVR-6235.
Anyone who sees the car is asked to call police at 210-207-SAPD. Anyone with information on the murder case should call Crime Stoppers at 210-224-STOP.
