Police arrest 1 capital murder suspect; brother at large

Detectives say Juan Raul Almendarez involved in robbery, fatal shooting

SAN ANTONIO – A man suspected of capital murder was arrested Sunday by San Antonio police.

Just hours after police released pictures of suspect Juan Raul Almendarez and his younger brother, officers arrested Almendarez during a Southeast Side traffic stop.

Police said Almendarez, 24, his 19 year-old brother Alejandro Almendarez-Hurtado and two other men entered a house on South San Eduardo Friday night with bandannas covering their faces. They said Almendarez had worked construction with men living at the house before recently getting fired.

A man who lives at the house told detectives the men get paid every Friday evening at the location.

Police said the suspects entered the house, robbed $480 from a man while he was in the shower, then Almendarez and his brother fired shots before running to a car and fleeing.

The shots hit and killed 47-year-old Enrique Gutierrez and wounded his son Enrique, Gutierrez Jr.

Almendarez-Hurtado is still sought for capital murder. Anyone with information about his whereabouts should contact San Antonio police.

Police have not released any information about the two other men who entered the house with Almendarez-Hurtado and Almendarez.
