Crews work to fix large sinkhole on West Side street

Sinkhole reported on Buena Vista at SW 20th streets near Elmendorf Lake Park

SAN ANTONIO – SAWS crews are working to fix a large sinkhole that was reported Tuesday on the West Side.

UPDATE: SAWS crews will be back at work at 8 a.m. Wednesday morning to continue work on the sinkhole found on Buena Vista at SW 20th Street.

A resident noticed the sinkhole on Buena Vista at SW 20th Street near Elmendorf Lake Park, and called city officials.

Officials said the street is closed until further notice. No injuries have been reported.

SAWS VP of Communications Gavino Ramos anticipates crews will finish the job on Tuesday night, so they can have the street open again by Wednesday morning.

The hole was about two feet wide when crews arrived, but they have since dug deeper to take a better look at the cause.

"Just like different areas in the city, as they age, we try to be a little proactive," said Ramos. "Try to find the areas where the pipes are getting older and so this is one of them because it's an older part of the city. So, this is one of the areas in town that we're set to upgrade, repair infrastructure."

Ramos said they have been using new technology to keep track and try to maintain streets.

This is the second large sinkhole to cause damage in the San Antonio area.

On Dec. 4, two cars became trapped in a massive sinkhole on Quintana Road on the Southwest Side.

The body of Bexar County Sheriff’s Deputy Dora Linda (Solis) Nishihara was recovered from one of the vehicles a day later.
