Newborns receive tiny red hats for Heart Month

"Little Hats, Big Hearts" campaign raises awareness for heart disease

SAN ANTONIO – February is Heart Month, and newborn babies at North Central Baptist Hospital are among the youngest to celebrate it.

Volunteers at the hospital are knitting tiny red hats for babies in the newborn intensive care unit as a part of the American Heart Association’s “Little Hats, Big Hearts” campaign.

“The faces they see on these mothers when they walk in … we do this for fun!” said Lisa Kyrisch, the hospital volunteer coordinator.

The volunteers meet each Friday morning to knit for NICU babies. Last year, they made almost 200 hats and blankets, Kyrisch said.

The “Little Hats, Big Hearts” campaign helps raise awareness that heart disease is the leading cause of death for Americans, and at least 40,000 babies are born with congenital heart defects each year.
