Man hospitalized after nearly drowning while playing underwater game

BEXAR COUNTY, Texas

A 65-year-old man is in the hospital after nearly drowning in his backyard pool in North Bexar County, the Bexar County Sheriff's Office said.

Authorities responded to a home in the 26000 block of Big Cypress at about 8:18 p.m. Saturday for a man who was found unresponsive in his backyard pool.

Witnesses said the man was competing with his neighbor's kids in an underwater breath-holding contest. A spokesperson for the sheriff's office said the man was underwater for several minutes before he was pulled out.

The man’s wife and emergency medical services personnel both performed CPR on the man.

The man was airlifted to University Hospital. His condition is unknown.
