Fire destroys vacant home on West Side

House boarded up Wednesday morning

SAN ANTONIO – Crews responded to a fire that destroyed a home on the city’s West Side Wednesday afternoon.

The call for the fire near South Picoso and South Laredo came in about 5:17 p.m. Six units responded and put out the fire in about 20 minutes.

A neighbor said the owners of the home were remodeling but stopped about three months ago. For the last couple of years, the homeowners have had problems with squatters in the vacant home and illicit activity.

On Wednesday morning, contractors had boarded up the home after squatters were kicked out by police Tuesday night.

The San Antonio Fire Department’s arson team is investigating.

The fire caused a total of $30,000 in damage. A neighbor's truck was also damaged. No injuries were reported.
