Mayor Ron Nirenberg details economic vision for San Antonio

Nirenberg wants to create job growth in different industries

SAN ANTONIO – In his first week on the job, San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg has his eyes set on economic growth.

“We want to create jobs that will benefit all San Antonians,” Nirenberg said, adding that creating jobs in different industries will lead to the success of the city.

"The degree to which we can build 21st-century jobs in San Antonio in the tech industry, in renewable energy, in all sorts of innovative industries, will be the success of San Antonio's economy,” Nirenberg said.

Nirenberg said that while downtown is already booming with tech industry jobs, he wants to see the entire community thrive.

“We have tools at the city and the county and at the state to encourage and facilitate small business growth. We want to use those effectively, but also one of the unique powers of the city is the ability to convene people and to create partnerships between small businesses and others in the private sector and public sector. And that's something that we look forward in doing,” Nirenberg said.

Nirenberg said there is room for improvement in what's being done now.

“That is one thing we can do a whole lot better ... incentivize and encourage and facilitate the growth of small businesses, local businesses, in San Antonio, where we know the bulk of job creation is coming from. And we have so many great business owners and entrepreneurs here in San Antonio that are employing families here, and they deserve encouragement and support,” Nirenberg said.
