'Killer Nurse' Genene Jones charged in 2 baby deaths

Jones charged with murder in deaths of Richard 'Ricky' Nelson, Patrick Zavala

SAN ANTONIO – Genene Jones, the so-called "killer nurse," was indicted Thursday by a Bexar County grand jury in connection with the deaths of two infants.

Jones was indicted for the slayings of 8-month-old Richard "Ricky" Nelson in July 1981 and for 4-month-old Patrick Zavala in January 1982.

The indictments come one week after a grand jury indicted Jones for the death of Rosemary Vega in September 1981. Jones was indicted in late May for the slaying of Joshua Sawyer in December 1981.

"We're going to continue to do our job and account for as many deaths as the evidence can prove," LaHood said Thursday during a press conference.

LaHood described Jones as "emotional" when she learned about the new indictments.

The grand jury recommended that Jones' bond is set at $1 million each for the two new charges.

Due to a law in effect at the time Jones was sentenced, she will be released from prison in March 2018. Prior to her mandatory release, she will be extradited back to Bexar County to await trial on the new charges.

Jones is currently incarcerated at the Lane Murray Unit in Gatesville.
