SAN ANTONIO – An outspoken local civil rights attorney has been awarded one of the Mexican government's highest honors.
Luis Vera, with the National Council for the League of United Latin American Citizens, filed the first SB 4 lawsuit challenging the "sanctuary cities" law.
Vera was presented the Ohtli award for contributing to the empowerment of Mexican communities abroad.
KSAT 12 News has interviewed Vera in the past about recent rulings that he's won regarding redistricting and voter identification.
Last week, SB 4 opponents rallied outside the federal courthouse, where Vera argued before a federal judge, asking for a preliminary injunction. It's an issue that could end up in the nation's highest court.
"So I've battled Texas for the last 25 years, and all of them have gone to the United States Supreme Court. And we've beat them back every time," Vera said.
Vera's award comes as the League of United Latin American Citizens is marking its 88th year with its national convention in San Antonio.
