Donations, volunteer efforts: How you can help victims of Hurricane Harvey

Food Bank asking for diapers, baby food

SAN ANTONIO – As the destruction from Hurricane Harvey grows, so does the need for volunteers and donations.

Here are the various ways the community can chip in:

KSAT 12 to host food drive for hurricane and flood victims Thursday

KSAT Community is hosting a food drive Thursday to benefit the victims of Tropical Storm Harvey.

The food drive will be at the San Antonio Food Bank at 5200 Enrique M. Barrera Parkway from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Fill the Truck Drive 

The men of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles are filling up a truck to take to the Texas coast. Stop by 2230 Hunt Lane Wednesday by 10 p.m. to give donations.

Items they're looking for include: Water, hygiene products, face towels, body towels, hand soap, hand sanitizer, diapers, baby wipes, combs/brushes, first aid kits, pet food, bug spray, zip lock bags, trash bags, flashlight and batteries. 

BBQ Fundraiser and Blood Drive

The San Antonio Young Mariners are hosting a barbeque fundraiser with $7 plates for sale from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday at Caliente Harley Davidson. 

There will also be a blood drive at the same location and location as the barbeque.

Red Cross

Those interested in volunteering can find more information on the Red Cross website. You can call 311 for more information on how to volunteer.

On Friday, the Red Cross expressed an urgent need for volunteers and received an overwhelming number of volunteers. The Red Cross is working to organize volunteer efforts and is instructing those wishing to volunteer to fill out an application on the Red Cross website.

Volunteers will be contacted when and if there is a need for volunteers.

Red Cross Phone Bank

You can donate to the Red Cross now by texting REDCROSS to 90999 to give $10 to American Red Cross Disaster Relief, which helps people affected by disasters such as hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, wildfires and tornadoes.

Charges will appear on your wireless bill, or be deducted from your prepaid balance. All purchases must be authorized by account holder. Animal Shelters

The city's animal shelters are taking in evacuees' pets. Animal shelters are asking for blankets, crates, towels, dog food, cat food and newspapers.

Those donations can be dropped off at Animal Care Services at ACS' main campus at 4710 State Highway 151.

San Antonio Pets Alive! is asking for monetary donations. Donations can be made on their website.

As of 5:30 p.m. Friday, ACS received 42 dogs and 29 cats.

Physical donations

The Bexar County Tax Assessor-Collector, Albert Uresti announced his offices would accept water, diapers, sheets (do not have to be new), blankets, soap, toothpaste, shampoo, toiletries, etc. for Houston residents affected by Harvey.

Tax offices are open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. with extended hours on Wednesdays, until 6:30 p.m.

Northeast Location: 3370 Nacogdoches Rd. San Antonio, TX 78217-3375
Northwest Location:8407 Bandera Rd. San Antonio, TX 78250-2574
Southside Location: 3505 Pleasanton Rd. San Antonio, TX 78221

 

Blood Bank

The South Texas Blood and Tissue Center is in critical need of blood donations. Donors can find the nearest donor room and schedule a donation by calling 210-731-5590 or visiting SouthTexasBlood.org

Food Bank

The San Antonio Food Bank is asking for nonperishable food, water, baby food, diapers, new or packaged clothing (used clothing will not be accepted) and water donations. 

Donations can be dropped off at the San Antonio Food Bank at 5200 Enrique M. Barerra Parkway between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Mayor Nirenberg announced all city council district offices would be converted to donation sites.
