SAN ANTONIO – October has been named Fire Prevention and Life Safety Month. The San Antonio Fire Department will be marking the occasion by offering free safety tips all month.
Wednesday was also the annual fire prevention poster contest judging at the Alamodome. Local students have submitted more than 700 entries.
The theme this year is "Every second counts, plan two ways out."
Fire safety officials say it highlights the need for everyone to have a fire safety plan and to practice that plan.
"You want to make sure that before the emergency occurs you know what to do, where to meet and don't go back in," said Randy Jenkins, division fire chief for the city of San Antonio. "The only way to learn that is by practicing a fire escape plan, because fire does not come at a convenient time."
Officials say they want the posters to empower kids to know what to do in case of a fire.
