Fire damages cement plant on North Side

No injuries reported at Capitol Cement Plant on Bulverde Road

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio firefighters battled a stubborn fire at a cement plant Wednesday morning on the city's North Side.

The fire was reported around 10:20 a.m. at the Capitol Cement Plant at 11551 Bulverde Road.

No injuries were reported.

Fire Chief Charles Hood said a hazardous materials crew is on the scene monitoring the situation, but there's no threat to air quality.

Hood said the fire on a tower has been knocked out, but crews will continue to tackle hot spots where coal is smoldering.

"This is a very stubborn fire. You really can't see, as far as damage," he said. "There's a big burn mark, scorch mark, on the side of the building. Heavy fire on the third and fourth floor."

Hood said the hazmat team will continue to check on firefighters that are covered in asphalt who will have to change out their gear.

About 30 fire units were on the scene at one point.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.

A damage estimate wasn't immediately available.
