Suspect, child killed during gun battle with BCSO deputies, sheriff says

Boy critically injured and died at University Hospital

SCHERTZ, Texas – A woman was shot and killed by Bexar County sheriff deputies Thursday afternoon after a manhunt near the Bexar County/Schertz border.

A 7-year-old-boy who was caught in the crossfire between deputies and the suspect was also fatally shot.

BCSO Sheriff Javier Salazar said the woman was a wanted felon, who pointed a weapon at deputies and had been running away from them.

Salazar said a police K-9 and a law enforcement helicopter helped in the search, which ended at the Pecan Grove Mobile Home Park. Deputies told Salazar they came across the woman as she was trying to break into homes in the community.

The deputies approached the woman and a gun battle quickly ensued, Salazar said.

The woman died at the scene.

A boy was inside the home at the time of the shooting and hit by gunfire. He was taken to University Hospital in critical condition and died a short time later.

The sheriff said two other people inside the home were also taken to the hospital.

Salazar said the deputies involved in the shooting have law enforcement experience ranging from two years to 27.

The manhunt prompted the lockdown of Corbett Junior High School.

"There is no imminent threat to the campus. Seven police officers are on campus and will work with campus officials to coordinate dismissal," according to a tweet from the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City Independent School District.
