Police said two boys, 10 and 14, believed to be Vela's sons were home when it happened, but did not check anything out until Wednesday morning.

Relatives and friends said the relationship between Vela and Espinosa was contentious and Vela had made Espinosa move out of the home, but allowed him to return and stay for the holidays.
