Deputy arrested on sexual assault charges, BCSO says

Deputy Leonard Lopez arrested after indictment in 2016 case

SAN ANTONIO – A deputy was arrested Tuesday on charges of sexual assault, officials with the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputy Leonard Lopez, 47, was arrested after an indictment in a September 2016 case. He is the sixth Bexar County deputy arrested since the beginning of 2018.

"This conduct is not indicative, in anyway, of conduct that we expect of a Bexar County deputy," Sheriff Javier Salazar said.

Lopez was off-duty when the alleged assault occurred, officials said.

The alleged victim is a woman in her mid-20s who knew Lopez, Salazar said. The alleged attack happened in a social setting, he said.

The Sheriff's Office said the victim did not report the attack until May 2017.

Sheriff’s Office officials said the agency has an ongoing administrative investigation concurrent with a San Antonio Police Department investigation.

Lopez was placed on administrative leave. He was previously on administrative duty and had no contact with the public, Salazar said.

Lopez is a 15-year employee of the Sheriff’s Office.
