K-9 officer finds 85-year-old missing woman clinging to tree in steep ravine

‘Hi, ma’am! This is a friendly dog. He found you!’

GREENWOOD VILLAGE, Colorado – A Colorado police officer and K-9 partner brought relief to a family whose 85-year-old relative was missing after finding the woman clinging to a tree.

Body camera footage showed Greenwood Village K-9 Officer Mercury and Officer Austin Speer looking for the woman on May 3. She had been reported missing for two hours.

As the duo made their way through a grassy, partially wooded area, the K-9 officer paced faster as it picked up the woman’s scent and eventually led Speer to her.

The woman was clinging to a tree down a steep ravine, where she was unable to be seen from the roadway or canal.

“Hi, ma’am! This is a friendly dog. He found you!” Speer told the woman excitedly as he approached her.

“That’s good,” the woman replied.

The video ends with the officer responding, “We’re gonna get you home. OK?”

K-9 Officer Mercury is trained in searching and tracking missing people. It joined the department a year and a half ago for that specific purpose and to help with narcotics detection, according to Greenwood Village police.
