SAN MARCOS – On Monday, the Texas State University Police Department announced it had discovered who was behind white supremacy fliers hung throughout campus on at least two different occasions.

The department said officers issued criminal trespass warnings to five men who had posted dozens of white supremacy fliers around campus on Sunday.

Authorities caught up with the men in the San Jacinto parking garage where they had gathered after posting fliers throughout the quad and music building. The department said none of the men are enrolled at Texas State.

"The individuals were carrying some of the handbills when UPD officers questioned them, and they acknowledged posting them on university property," the release said.

The department said it had issued the warnings to allow UPD officers to issue criminal trespass citations to the men if they return to campus.

UPD said it increased foot patrols over a 13-month period to ensure the safety of students, faculty and staff on the campus.

In October, Texas State University President Denise Trauth said the acts have been perpetrated at campuses across the nation, but that the acts are seldom carried out by students.

"These offensive acts, which routinely occur under cover of darkness, have been documented at roughly 150 university and college campuses in more than 30 states over the past year," Trauth said. "In virtually each case, the acts are believed to have been carried out by individuals outside of those university communities."
