Hondo – The Hondo Independent School District announced Monday that all of the district’s football games scheduled for this week are canceled due to several players and a coach contracting COVID-19.

The message on Twitter said the decision was made “out of an abundance of caution and for the safety of all involved.”

Superintendent A’Lann Truelock said football was the only sport affected at this time.

Hondo High School played San Antonio Memorial at home last Friday. The varsity team was scheduled to play Lytle in Hondo this Friday.

Rising COVID-19 cases are causing concern in schools across Texas. Several districts have canceled classes in recent days, hoping to slow the spread.

According to Hondo ISD’s website, there are 15 active cases of COVID-19 among students and two cases among staff, as of Aug. 27. Six of the student cases are at the high school.
