Supreme Court extends Trump-era pandemic immigration rule to allow quicker deportations

The Supreme Court ruled Tuesday to keep in place a controversial Trump-era rule that allows Customs and Border Patrol officials to deport migrants at the U.S. southern border as a public health measure in response to the pandemic. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts temporarily blocked the Biden administration earlier this month from ending the controversial policy, called Title 42. More than 2 million people have been deported at the southern border under the policy since 2020. But Republican-led states intervened in the case and successfully petitioned the Supreme Court last week to block that lower court ruling. Republicans and some Democrats argue that ending the policy will lead to a major increase in migration at the southern border that communities there are unequipped to deal with.

Rural Texas residents drive the distance for COVID-19 vaccines

Boerne Mayor Tim Handren said Kendall County received about 1,200 vaccines in early January, but they were used quickly. AdHandren says the state seems to give preference to hospitals, and Kendall County doesn’t have one. It’s also about accessibility, and many in that community can drive to hubs like San Antonio for a vaccine. Kendall County will be receiving about 600 Moderna vaccines this week -- 400 for the city and 200 for the county. Yates says she got lucky taking a drive to San Antonio and getting a shot.

San Antonio, surrounding areas are getting thousands of COVID-19 vaccines this week. Here’s where they’re going.

Dozens of hospitals, urgent care clinics and H-E-B pharmacies in Bexar County are slated to receive 30,200 doses of the Moderna vaccine this week. Made by Moderna, the vaccine requires two doses like the already approved Pfizer vaccine. The Moderna vaccine was endorsed by a government advisory panel on Thursday in a 20-0 vote. Some rural areas that had been waiting for word on when they would receive shipments will be included in week 2, data shows. Last week, nearly 30,000 doses of the Pfizer-made vaccine were shipped to San Antonio-area hospitals and military bases.
