Community members gather to pray for San Antonio artist in hospital battling cancer

Jesse Trevino, 75, is known for decades-long career as San Antonio artist

SAN ANTONIO – Community members gathered Wednesday evening to pray for 75-year-old Jesse Trevino, one of San Antonio’s most prolific artists currently in a Houston hospital battling cancer.

On Wednesday, Trevino’s closest friends and fans gathered at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center on South Brazos Street to hold a rosary service for him.

The location of the event was special. It’s where Trevino created the mural called “La Veladora.”

“He represents service, valor, honor, duty, and, of course, arts. He really is arts and culture in San Antonio,” said Ricardo Romo, a historian and one of Trevino’s closest friends.

Community members say they want to make sure Trevino is always remembered for his decades-long contributions to the local art scene.

One of Trevino’s most well-known murals has been on the side of the Christus Santa Rosa Hospital since 1997. The 90-foot-tall tile mural is called “The Spirit of Healing.”
