‘Never spend another dime to see him’: Country music fans react to Eric Church canceling San Antonio concert

Church says in email he will attend Final Four instead of performing at AT&T Center on Saturday

SAN ANTONIO – Eric Church is metaphorically dunking on his San Antonio fans.

Fans of the country music singer received an email on Tuesday afternoon stating Church’s anticipated concert Saturday at the AT&T Center would be canceled so he could attend the NCAA Men’s Final Four this weekend in New Orleans to watch North Carolina play Duke. The email read:

“This Saturday, my family and I are going to stand together to cheer on the Tar Heels as the team has made it to the Final Four. As a lifelong Carolina basketball fan, I’ve watched Carolina and Duke battle over the year but to have them matchup in the Final Four for the first time in history of the NCAA Tournament is any sports enthusiast’s dream.

“This is also the most selfish thing I’ve ever asked the Choir to do: to give up your Saturday night plans with us so that I can have this moment with my family and sports community. However, it’s that same type of passion felt by the people who fill the seats at our concerts that makes us want to be part of a crowd at a game of this significance.”

The news did not sit well with many people who had tickets to Church’s concert. San Antonio resident Marcy Talamantez said Church’s excuse for cancelling the concert is unacceptable.

“How dare him? Many people such as myself purchased tickets almost a year ago,” said Talamantez. “It’s absurd because if he’s that type of basketball fan and he knew it’s the Final Four, he should have not scheduled a concert during that time.”

While there were some people on social media who gave credit to Church for being upfront and honest, many others echoed Talamantez’s thoughts.

One twitter user posted that he and his wife had traveled from Canada to Texas for the concert, and another posted that she had to cancel hotel, dinner and rental reservations.

“I really liked him as an artist. But for you to do this to your fans, the people that made you, is a slap in the face,” said Talamantez.

A spokesperson for the AT&T Center would not comment on how many tickets were sold for the concert but told KSAT 12 that all ticket buyers were notified via email and will be refunded automatically. The spokesperson added there are no current plans to makeup the concert.

Talamantez said it wouldn’t matter to her one way or the other. She is done supporting Eric Church and he has lost her as a fan.

“I would never spend another dime to see him,” said Talamantez.
