All-clear issued at JBSA-Lackland; suspect arrested after making ‘comments’ prompting main gate closure

Civilian attempted to gain access to installation, officials say

SAN ANTONIO – The all-clear has been given at JBSA-Lackland after a military bomb squad found no indications of an explosive.

According to JBSA officials, security force personnel responded around 8:30 a.m. to a report of a suspicious package at the Loop East Gate.

Officials later said that a civilian tried to gain access to the base and made comments that prompted base officials to dispatch its bomb squad, Explosive Ordinance Disposal, to investigate.

“The search was ended with negative findings after a complete evaluation of the vehicle and its contents,” a news release said. The all-clear was issued at 12:18 p.m.

A suspect was arrested and is in the custody of the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office.

During the investigation, West Military Drive from Highway 90 to Five Palms Drive was shut down, but has since reopened.

The Luke Avenue East and West Gates remain closed as officials complete final actions, and the Selfridge West Gate will remain open for personnel until normal operations are resumed.
