Padre Island beaches will close to driving starting Thursday at noon

Tropical Depression Harvey could cause storm surge

The beaches along Padre Island National Seashore will close to driving starting at noon on Thursday.

The closure is due to the latest weather forecast for Tropical Depression Harvey, which is headed for the Texas Coast.

Wednesday morning a hurricane watch was issued for parts of the Texas coast, and a tropical storm watch was issued for other stretches.

In a press release, the National Park Service said people should be aware of the following:

• The storm surge is predicted to be 4-6 feet above normal.
• Surges often arrive before the storm.
• This surge will cover the beach up to the dune line.
• Once the beaches reopen, watch out for debris.

The National Park Service will reassess the conditions every morning to determine when the beaches will reopen to beach driving.
