SAN ANTONIO – More than 900 runners and walkers gathered at Providence High School Saturday for the annual Head for the Cure event, raising more than $75,000 for brain cancer research and patient support programs.
KSAT has helped sponsor the race since 2014 in the fight against brain cancer and to honor late News Director Jim Boyle. Funds raised support clinical trials and patient-family support programs that serve patients and families in the San Antonio community.
For many participants, the event is more than a race — it’s a personal mission.
Linzie Davis and her daughter Alexza were among the hundreds who turned out to remember loved ones and reaffirm why they keep coming back year after year.
“It means so much when you see something like this still going so strong all these years later,” Davis said.
Davis says the shared experience of loss and hope is what makes the event so meaningful.
“So you see year after year, so whether it’s a new diagnosis or something of the past, we’re all here championing the same cause. And it’s just beautiful to see that love and community support,” Davis said.
For Clara Hartfiel, the race is a tribute to her father.
“My dad was diagnosed with a medulloblastoma in 2009, the year that I was born, and he fought for 13 years, so we honor him. He passed away in 2022, but his memory still lives on through this race,” Hartfiel said.
Hartfiel says watching her neighbors show up in force is a powerful reminder of why finding a cure matters. She wants people to remember her father for the life he lived — not the disease he fought.
“He wasn’t defined by this disease. He was defined by who he was as a person,” Hartfiel said.
Last year, nearly 1,000 runners and walkers participated in the San Antonio race, raising more than $60,000 for brain cancer research. The race has grown into a community tradition for people running in honor of family members, friends or themselves.
