SAN ANTONIO – Texas Commission on Law Enforcement records obtained Friday by KSAT confirm the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office commissioned William McManus as a peace officer weeks after he retired as chief of the San Antonio Police Department.
The commission, which went into effect July 25, came just over two weeks after McManus stepped down from SAPD.

A BCSO spokesperson on Friday confirmed the commission and added that McManus is a reserve deputy who receives no wages.
The spokesperson did not respond to a follow-up question from KSAT asking why the ex-chief was brought on in a reserve role.
BCSO holding McManus’ commission allows him to maintain an active peace officer’s license.
An agency appointment can be useful if the officer intends to work periodically or eventually move into another law enforcement position.
McManus originally said he would retire from the San Antonio Police Department on Sept. 30, but announced an accelerated retirement in early July.
He accepted a role as vice president of safety and security for Silver Ventures, a company that manages properties within Pearl, but shifted to a consulting role after one week on the job.
McManus left SAPD this summer after almost 20 years in charge of the department. He served as chief since 2006 and briefly stepped away in 2015.
McManus did not respond to a request seeking comment Friday.
Chief Jesse Salame was appointed as the new SAPD chief earlier this month and officially confirmed on Sept. 10. in a unanimous vote by city council.
