SAFD opens first ever wild land fire station

Fire Station 53 located in 14000 block of Donop Road

SAN ANTONIO – City officials were on hand Monday for the first-of-its-kind fire station opening in San Antonio history.

Fire station 53 located in the 14000 block of Donop Road on the far South Side is the first ever wild land fire station in the city.

The 14,000 square-foot structure will house 12 firefighters who are specially trained to deal with certain types of emergencies.

Chief Charles Hood said the station will house equipment that should firefighters get to a home that is surrounded by trees and other vegetation.

Hood also said the firefighters helped last month when several tornadoes touched down across the North Side.
