BEXAR COUNTY, Texas ā The sister of a father of two who was gunned down nearly a month ago in northeast Bexar County is speaking out after the suspected gunman, Alex Ortiz, 20, was arrested and charged with murder Wednesday.
Shanessa Hughs was building a walkway with her younger brother, Mark Hughes, at her Bandera home before he died.
āSince heās passed, Iāve been trying to put a lot more effort into it,ā she said.
For now, the walkway serves as a memorial. Hughs said sheās been waiting for an arrest in her brotherās case for almost month.
āI didnāt want this to be something that people turned a blind eye to,ā she said.
Ortiz was arrested Wednesday for the shooting death of Mark Hughes. He was killed on March 29 at a mobile home park on Walzem Road.
Deputies said the shooting happened over a neighborhood dispute.
Hughs said she lived in the same neighborhood as her brother, but she moved out a month and a half before the shooting. She was concerned over the violence in the neighborhood, but she never thought her brother would be a victim to it.
āHe built, like, tons of fences and he spent time with the kids and played with them,ā Hughs said.
Hughs said she saw Ortiz around the area but didnāt know him.
Ortiz is being held on a $100,000 bond.
"I got to have love in my heart with Jesus, so I just, I can't really say. I want there to be justice. I want him to have jail time and anyone who was involved. I want justice,ā Hughs said.
Mark Hughes left behind two sons under the age of 6.Ā
